GREG NOLL, HAWAIIAN GUNS, MODERN CLASSICS
Description
The greatest big wave surfer ever? Greg Noll, a pioneer of Waimea Bay, Outer Reef Pipeline and he conquered the “largest wave ever ridden”at Makaha Point. Greg Noll did all this with no leash, no rescue team, no canister vest, and no oxygen. So yeah, Greg Noll is the greatest ever. We have on the auction block for the Spring 2025 auction a modern classic Greg Noll hand shaped 11‘4“ Outer Reef Pipeline Gun. Shaped in the early ’00s, this is an exact replica of the 1964 elephant gun board Greg Noll rode on that legendary day on the North Shore of Oahu. This board was commissioned by a friend of Greg’s and shaped at Greg’s home in Northern California. This board features what we think is one of the greatest logos ever: Greg Noll’s cameraman film productions logo. The entire board is a magnificent deep yellow with a 1” center stinger and black pinlines accenting the stringer and logo. Below the logo, Greg Noll signed in Sharpie “Aloha, Greg Noll”. There is a small logo at the tail which states: Surfboards by Greg and Jed NOLL. The bottom features a gorgeous custom made chopstick fin. This board is pristine, a 10 out of 10 showroom quality condition– about as mint as it gets.
Condition: 10 out of 10. Showroom quality.
Signature: YES
Provenance:
One owner. Original owner. A friend of Greg‘s. Board commissioned by the owner and an absolute stunner. This board is prominently featured in Greg Noll’s book “The Art of The Surfboard by Drew Kampion. A masterpiece shaped by an iconic legend of surfing. A man whose mythology transcends.
Literature:
Greg Noll discusses his incredible day at outer reef Pipeline in 1964: Ricky Grigg was up on top of his car you telling us when to go… anyway we paddled out… we took lineups from Kaena Point. A set broke once as we were paddling out and it broke, and I will never forget the wave, it was just… you know all the pictures of that day… it’s all gloomy and shitty. When I saw the wave, I don’t know if there was a break in the clouds or what but here’s this beautiful, just beautiful wave. The sun… like diamonds shimmering on the wave face. You know, I don’t know how big it was. It was by far the biggest I’ve ever seen Pipeline. I take off and my tail is floating down and sliding down the face and then I just couldn’t get out of it. All I could do is just spread out and hang on to my balls and hope for the best. It went forever. It just went and went. I could hear the board man– just raise up. I looked down and I’m just like floating on the face of the wave. You don’t see this in the pictures, but the wind picked my board up. I just spread out… spread out you know, like a pancake, and trying to stay on this thing and folded over in front of me. — end quote from Greg Noll.
