Literature
When Donald Takayama was just 12 years old, he had a pivotal encounter with surfboard icon Dale Velzy at Waikiki. After inspecting Donald’s self-shaped board, Velzy was so impressed by his craftsmanship that he offered him a place to stay in California, suggesting they work together to create surfboards. Takayama eagerly accepted, and soon after, he was at Velzy’s side in California, where the surfboard industry was booming.
In a world where surfboard brands were proliferating, Takayama made the decision to shape boards for Hap Jacobs, a company that quickly rose to prominence in the early ‘60s. Jacobs Surfboards became synonymous with quality and innovation, and Donald’s presence brought a distinctive Hawaiian influence that drew surfers to their shop from all around the county.
Despite being relatively new to the industry, Donald’s enthusiasm for surfing often overshadowed his business acumen. As Jacobs himself recalls, one morning he arrived to find the shop unlocked and swarming with customers – but no Donald. It seemed Takayama had forgotten to lock up after heading out for a surf session, displaying his unwavering passion for riding waves over the intricacies of business.
